I'm not completely satisfied with the current state of affairs, but anything I could say would not be an improvement over what others have already written. So, have a link dump, instead.

Basically, my view is that governments themselves aren't necessarily bad, but they are full of people. Biased, greedy, headstrong people. And that's usually the point where things tend to go wrong.
